He sits on the sidewalk, clutching a cardboard sign
His clothes are torn and dirty, his face is lined with grime
He looks at the passing strangers, hoping for a dime
But all he gets are glares and sneers, as if he's committed a crime
He remembers his mother, how she loved him so
How she taught him right from wrong, how she helped him grow
But he betrayed her trust and kindness, he chose a different path
He fell into addiction and violence, he faced his father's wrath
He wishes he could see her, to hug her one last time
To tell her that he's sorry, to beg for her sublime
But he knows it's too late, she's gone and he's alone
He cries out for his mother, but all he hears is a groan
